Gem Manufacturing produced this total air temperature sensor for a customer in the aerospace industry. This instrument, designed to enable computation of static air temperature and true air speed, had many intricate features that required precise control over multiple machining operations. Our technicians started with round 316L stainless steel stock and machined it into two halves. They used various machining techniques, including profiling, pocketing, drilling, and countersinking to shape the features, and programmed multiple blending passes to achieve the complex contours on the upper half. Careful setups ensured that each machining operation produced highly accurate results. The 12 units in this production run were passivated for additional corrosion resistance, then visually and dimensionally inspected using an optical comparator as well as a variety of gauges.
