Engineering & Capabilities

Our expertise lies in the manufacture of precision deep drawn metal products, stampings and mechanical assemblies.

Shapes
Most geometric shapes are attainable.

  • Round , oval
  • Square, rectangular
  • Irregular
Depth of Draw
Attainable depth of draw is relative to diameter size. The illustration below identifies the maximum length we can achieve at the corresponding diameter. All part sizes equal to or smaller than those depicted are within our capacity to produce.

Materials
We can manufacture from all malleable materials from .002 (.05 mm) to .090 (2.28 mm)
  • Copper, bronze and brass
  • Steel (1008 to 1070), 4140 and HSLA
  • Stainless steel and nickel based alloys
  • Aluminum
  • Pre-plated materials
Features
Various features can be formed as part of primary press operations or as secondary operations when volume is low and/or cost to integrate those operations is prohibitive.
  • Multiple pierced holes, cut-outs and lances
  • Ribs, beads and knurls
  • In-die tapping and roll threading
Finishing Operations
A wide variety of finishing processes are available either in-house or by qualified, independent sub-contractors. Please note that we assume full responsibility for part compliance whether finishing operations are performed in-house or by a subcontractor. In-house capabilities include cleaning, deburring and printing. Plating, heat treating, anodizing and passivation are available through sub-contractors.

Design Support Engineered Cost Savings
Involving Gem in your product development can yield cost savings and enhance the performance of your product. Parts produced from alternative processes, such as seamless tube and screw machine, can often be redesigned for manufacture as drawn metal components. The examples below compare a machined tire valve cap (machined cap on right in both images) and one that has been produced as a drawn metal part by Gem Manufacturing.

Drawn Metal / Machined

Drawn Metal / Machined

The benefits of the drawn metal cap are:
  • A 65.7% reduction in raw material.
  • A 56.5% reduction in net weight.
By reducing weight, the resultant centrifugal forces on the valve are also reduced making balancing the tire easier.

Although benefits from re-design will vary, the greatest savings are achieved when the amount of scrap generated by the alternative process exceeds 60% or when multi-piece assemblies can be redesigned into a single drawn part or stamping.
